In June, 2006, Picador (an imprint at PanMacmillan) launched Picador Shots, a series of pocket-sized books. They priced them at £1 and packaged them as disposable books that were supposed to be an alternative to magazines.

The Shots stated aim was to promote the short story as well as the work of some Picador’s authors.  it was a smart marketing ploy that likely exposed their writers to a broader audience—in the same way that chapbooks do. As near as I can tell, they produced a dozen or so titles before the series fizzled out in 2014?
